Speeder Race - The Making
Hi,
A year ago, we had to develop a prototype for a game for my university (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences). My fellow student Philipp Irmscher and I formed a team and decided to develop a mixture of our two interests. So, we came up with the idea of developing a racing game in a Star Wars setting. Now, 1 year after we finished working on it, we decided to share it with you.
Below, I will talk a little more about the technical implementation of the game. If you are eager to know more about the design of the game, you can check out Philipp Irmscher's Art Station. Furthermore, you should follow my itch.io account to see many more nice projects in the future :)
Technology:
The game was developed with the Unity Game Engine. I decided to use it because I already had a lot of experience with it in the past, so we didn't have to learn an entirely new tool. In retrospect, this decision was fine, but perhaps a little more would have been possible with the Unreal Engine.
The Game:
The game is a first or third-person racing game where you drive as fast as possible through a variety of Star Wars-inspired tracks. Players can choose from different clone armours from the Star Wars universe, such as the Standard or ARC-Troopers. The game features a variety of game modes, including time trials, (local) multiplayer races. The tracks range from Felucia to Umbara. We also implemented a drift mechanic, which allows players to slide around corners and gain a speed boost when done correctly. Mastering the drift mechanic is essential to achieving fast lap times and winning races.
Controls:
The controls were a bit tricky to get right because they had to be Arcady but still look and feel physically correct. So, we decided to base it completely on Unity's Force Physics system, which allowed us to create a realistic and satisfying sense of weight and momentum for the vehicles. Players can control their vehicle using the left stick or A&D keys for steering, while the right trigger or W key is used for acceleration. The left trigger or space is used for braking and reverse, the right button or left shift can be used for a rechargeable boost and the left button or space bar for drifting.
I have to warn you: The controls are sometimes very hard to get.
Graphics:
We wanted the game to look visually stunning and capture the essence of the Star Wars universe. To achieve this, we used a combination of high-quality 3D models and textures, along with dynamic lighting.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, we're very proud of the game we developed and hope that players will enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed making it. We believe that our attention to detail in the technical implementation, graphics, and sound have resulted in a highly immersive and satisfying racing experience in the Star Wars universe. We're excited to see what the future holds for this game and can't wait to share our next project with you.
Sadly, the development will not go on, since we would have to use branded content and don't want to get sued :D
